It was declared a biosphere reserve in 1986 and a year later it was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its exceptional biodiversity and extensive wetlands.

In the Mayan language, Sian Ka’an means “place where heaven is born” and is also known locally as Heaven’s Gate. It has an area of ​​528,147 hectares and is located between the municipalities of Tulum and Felipe Carillo Puerto. It is a very important natural park in the region because it houses an important biodiversity of the Mayan biosphere, typical of the red, black, white and gray mangroves where many marine and terrestrial species live.

The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve (“where the sky is born”) is a UNESCO site located on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

This biosphere reserve covers 10% of the whole state of Quintana Roo and contains tropical forests, mangroves and marshes, as well as a large marine section intersected by a barrier reef. What to do in Sian Ka’an, it provides a habitat for a remarkably rich flora and a fauna.

We do our tours, even with some rain. If there is lightning, we do not go in the water until the storm has passed.

Keep in mind that Caribbean weather is almost unpredictable. We suggest to give it a try and if we see the forecast to be unfavorable, you have the option to change your day if you prefer (according to availability).
