Glide with your kayak into and around beautiful wetland mazes, wildlife, and local Mayan history in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve (SKBR). The SKBR was established in 1986 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. It is also a RAMSAR site due to the international importance of it’s wetlands. It is home to a large number of resident and migratory bird species (around 320), five neotropical felines, sea turtles, crocodiles, tapirs, and manatees. This expedition is the best opportunity to get introduced to kayaking for first-timers or experienced ones who want to explore the incredible natural wonders of this region. We will also snorkel in an open mangrove cenote, part of the second largest underground river system of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is a highly recommended activity to enjoy sights of its incredible diversity and to understand the complexity of this wetland ecosystem.

☼ 1:30pm: Meeting time at the Cenote Yaxchen.
☼ Snorkel in an open mangrove cenote to understand the complexity of this ecosystem and to explore what lies under the mangroves.
☼ Drive 3km to enter the SKBR until reaching our dock to continue our journey by kayak.
☼ We explore the Caapechen Lagoon paddling among mangrove mazes and calm waters, visit some colonies of nesting birds such as frigates, spoonbills, egrets, herons and more, learn about the importance of mangroves and share explanation of the ecology and history of the area.
☼ We will enjoy delicious homemade tamales either before paddling or on our way back, depending on the group’s desires.
☼ 7:00pm – 7:30pm: Back at your hotel.

This is a first class socially and environmentally responsible tour operation. The guides really know their stuff, and provide an incredible depth of knowledge about the local ecology which makes for an unbelievable experience away from the crowds just wanting to take pictures, yes, you’ll take amazing pictures but the experience goes way beyond any photo that you can take. If you’re looking for a special experience that requires a bit more effort, for a much bigger reward, and you can handle whatever nature will throw at you then this organization is the best in region.

The guides were very relaxed and fun to adventure with. I’m not a big bird person but watching the birds return home to a small mangrove island for the night at sunset was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We are so grateful that we could experience such amazing events, and I recommend these trips to anyone and everyone. Also, the fresh fruit and tamales were SO good.
